Windsor First Aid is one of the top providers of food safety and sanitation training in Windsor, Ontario. There are several courses you can enroll in but food safety is one of our most popular. Most of our students are food service workers or food handlers who work in food facilities, because of the bylaws that mandate food handler training in the province. The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care mandates all medium and high-risk facilities to have staff members trained and certified in food safety – hence the influx of food handler trainees at Windsor First Aid.

What causes foodborne illness?
Foodborne illness infects a person when he or she ingests food that has been contaminated by bacteria or chemicals. Bacteria and chemicals contaminate food when food service workers do not practice safe food handling, especially when handling raw food. If at any point in the food handling process food becomes contaminated, it becomes unsafe for public consumption because the risk of the consumer getting foodborne illness is very high.
The most common microorganisms that cause FBIs are viruses and bacteria. The Norovirus is actually the most prevalent cause of foodborne illness, responsible for over 58 percent of cases. Campylobacter spp., Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus are the other microorganisms that cause foodborne illness.
Classroom and self-study training with Food Safety in Windsor
There are two kinds of food safety training courses available at Windsor First Aid. The classroom-based course is a regular training program set in our facility classrooms and laboratories. When you sign up for either basic or advanced food safety training, you get all the workbooks that cover our coursework as well as a schedule for the certification exam.
Self-study is a little different. This course targets students who are already working or are still in school, making it impossible for them to attend the regular training schedule (which runs from 8 AM to 4 PM). If you decide to take a self-study course, you can buy our workbooks and sign up for the certification exam separately.
- Level 1 – introduction to food safety and foodborne illness, eight hours (1 days)
- Level 2 – advanced food safety course for management/supervisory staff, 16 hours (2 days)
Food safety credentials are only valid for 5 years before they expire and have to be renewed again. To renew your training credentials, just sign up for a refresher course and take another certification exam.
Note: Students who want to take level 2 training must complete level 1 training first.
